Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it includes the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to change how you play Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also adds a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," noted a senior product manager. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case."

If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your companions on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack ideally crafted for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The unruly pleasure isn't limited to there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now a reality, and it deserves to be an competitive event right away.

Another significant inclusion in this new update is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no need to surface for fresh air.

The remaining new features are largely things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've pondered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for underwater mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also points out that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you encounter underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the last content update of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the potential for chaos — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
