Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
