Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
